Installing a dark theme
I've been developing on Intrepid in a vm lately, and one thing I've noticed is that my eyes are much happier using the dark theme than the normal one in Hardy. The dark colors contrast less with the room and make the monitor output less light, reducing strain on my eyes and making it easier to go to bed after working at 3am. The dark interface elements draw more attention to my actual work - I'm not focusing on the Applications menu or the taskbar or the Firefox titlebar, but instead the actual web page I'm browsing.

This isn't about looks - it's about usability.

I wanted a similar dark theme in Hardy, so I tried fooling around with the highest rated dark themes on gnome-looks.org. Big mistake. I tried at least 6, and every single one of them did annoying things like change Google's search bar to white text on a black background.

It took me a while to find out, but the best dark theme for Hardy is already in the apt repositories - the ubuntustudio-theme package. Unlike the others, it keeps Firefox and Pidgin behaving as you'd expect. It's also got customizable interface colors.

There was a good side to my computer helping turn me into a night owl though - energy is cheaper during off peak hours, and traffic is lighter when I end up driving. I've only just started using the dark theme full time, but it may very well cause me to stay up even later as I won't mind the late-night monitor light as much.

I have always wanted a dark theme as I recognized how much easier it made using the computer for hours on end ever since using white text on blue in office for my thesis, well the second half of it anyway. I tried out a tonne of themes but was never satisfied until I found this theme which I tried in my Hardy VM then modified for Gutsy:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/NewWave

It keeps everything simple with not too much dark and works better than the ubuntustudio-theme under gutsy.

If you have compiz you can also use the negative plugin to invert window colours.

Finally the bookmarklet here:
http://lifehacker.com/software/lifehacker-code/invert-web-page-colors-with-the-darken-bookmarklet-259456.php can be very helpful if you spend a lot of the day on the web and its windows compatible which means I can use it on my work machine.

Can u tell me how do u do to develop with a dark theme? I've hardy and I use the new human theme but not when I'm developing, since I find it very hard to see the code colored with a dark background in the editor.
I also tried to change the background to white using gnome color chooser but unexpected things happened, though don't remember witch ones right now.

The ubuntu-studio theme leaves gedit with it's normal black text on white background. This is unlike the other 6 themes I tried on gnome-look.org.

That's nice, but lets hope that the Ubuntu Art team listens to the numerous complains (or laughs of disbelief really) on the current theme that is being tested.

Finally a dark theme that doesn't fail. I love dark themes, but the usability is usually bad to worst. This one is usable. Thanks.

People on satanic ubuntu do a great job in making dark theme.

Tho the Recant Inhuman standard theme makes everything eyefriendlier firefox still uses webpages backgrounds(some of them white).

Anyway i dont think webpages background can be modified that easy.

White on Black is fine by me.

What I really hate, that makes dark themes unusable, is the inevitable application that only partially adheres to system colors, leaving you with White on White or Black on Black. For me, this was in the ScribeFire extension on Firefox. Haven't tried going dark in a while... maybe it's time to try again.
